Party - A party to a hearing: a protestee, a boat requesting redress; a boat or competitor that may be penalized under rule 69.1; a race committee or an organizing authority in a hearing under rule 62.1(a). (ISAF Rules)

pinch - To pull the sail in too far in while trying to go more to windward on a beat.

pintle - The pin which holds the rudder onto the gudgeon.

plane - When the boat goes so fast it lifts up in the water.

point - To sail close to the wind, when beating

port - The left side of the boat as you are facing forward.

port tack - When the boom is on the starboard side of the boat.  Normally when on port tack the wind comes from the port side of the boat.

Postpone - A . A postponed race is delayed before its scheduled start but may be started or abandoned later. (ISAF Rules)

Proper Course - A course a boat would sail to finish as soon as possible in the absence of the other boats referred to in the rule using the term. A boat has not proper  course before her starting signal. (ISAF Rules)

pumping - Repeated fanning of a sail either by trimming and releasing the sail of by vertical of athwartships body movement. (42.2 a)

Racing - A boat is racing from her preparatory signal until she finishes and clears the finishing line and marks or retires, or until the race committee signals a general recall, postponement  or abandonment. (ISAF Rules)

reach - Sailing with the wind mostly beside you.

rhumb line - A straight line between you and the mark you want to go to.

rig - to put up the sail and attach the spars

right of way - When the other boat has to stay out of your way

rocking - Repeatedly rolling the boat (42.2 b)

roll tack - An up wind tack during which you use your body to tip the boat during the tack so you don’t lose speed.

Room - The space a boat needs in the existing conditions, while manoeuvring promptly in a seamanlike way.   (ISAF Rules)

rudder - A foil (or board) which turns the boat, usually mounted in the back of the boat

  1. (b) ISAF Regulation 19, eligibility Code; Regulation 20, Advertising Code, Regulation 21, ANti-Doping Code; and REgulation 22, Sailor Classification Code;

  2. (c) the prescriptions of the national authority, unless they are changed by the sailing instructions in compliance with the national authority’s prescription, if any, to rule 88

  3. (d) the class rules (for boat racing under a handicap or rating  system, the rules of that system are ‘class rules’)(ISAF Rules);

  4. (e)the notice of race;

  5. (f)the sailing instruction; and
