Planting honorary and memorial trees in the Borough is a wonderful way to preserve the original vision of Mountain Lakes as a community in a park-like setting.  While honoring your loved ones you also provide a valuable addition to our tree planting program.  Thank you for your donation.

The following list of guidelines will help you through the process.

  1. Contact the Shade Tree Commission (STC) if you are interested in purchasing an honorary or memorial tree.
  2. The following information is required:  the name of the person who will be honored, the name of the person who is donating the tree, and whether it is an honorary or memorial tree.
  3. The donation covers the cost of the tree and its planting. The price at this printing is $250 per tree and subject to change. Checks should be made out to the Borough of Mountain Lakes and sent to Borough Hall.
  4. There will be a one time, annual autumn planting for these trees, or at the discretion of the STC.
  5. All trees will be planted on borough owned property, the site determined by the STC.  A request of flowering or non-flowering tree or particular tree species may be made by the donor and will be considered, but final selection will be made by the STC depending on availability and location chosen.  Donors will be notified after tree planting to confirm location and species.
  6. Certificates will be issued when the donation is received and can be picked up at Borough Hall.  Wording will be determined by the donor and/or the STC.
  7. The type of tree planted, location, date, wording on the certificate and honoree’s name will be recorded.  No plaque, commemorative marker, or ornamentation, whether permanent or temporary, may be put on or near trees in accordance with Borough Council policy.
  8. The donated tree becomes the property and responsibility of the Borough of Mountain Lakes and as such, will be maintained, pruned and if necessary, removed by the Borough.  In case of the tree’s demise, the STC is not responsible for its replacement or for notifying the donor and/or honoree.
