The Lake Drive Foundation provides critical funding for The Sound Start Program at Lake Drive School. Since the program's inception, Sound Start has helped more than 1,000 children who are deaf and hard of hearing from Northern and Central New Jersey develop the vital communication skills they need for a lifetime of learning.
The Hansberry Family Thanks The Lake Drive Foundation From The Bottom of Their Hearts
Being born a healthy and hearing child in July 2006, our son Sean developed pneumococcal meningitis in January of 2008. He was a very sick little boy and was in hospital for 16 days. About a month after that, we started to notice Sean was not responding to sounds and voices as well as he once did, and eventually, not at all. An ABR test under sedation confirmed our fears that Sean was in fact permanently and profoundly deaf in both his ears as a result of his fight with meningitis. Then just 10 days later, Sean received bilateral cochlear implants that were later activated for him to learn to hear and speak again.
