Borough of Mountain Lakes
400 Boulevard
Mountain Lakes, New Jersey 07046
June 1, 2008
Dear Resident:
I am writing to advise you of the Borough's effort to conserve water for the months of June, July, August, and September in order not to exceed the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's allotment of 30 million gallons per month.
It is vital that all Lakers assist in this effort.
In accordance with Borough Ordinance 15-07 which amended Chapter 237 of the Revised General Ordinances of the Borough of Mountain Lakes, there has been a restrictions placed on watering of lawns, trees and shrubs. Residents with an even house number should water on even calendar days; and residents with an odd house number should water on odd calendar days. There is no watering of lawns, trees and shrubs on July 31st and August 31st. Additionally, residents should restrict sprinkler zones to a 30-minute maximum. Such water use shall be done only from 12:01 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight on the allowed days. There should be no such outdoor water usage on July 31 or August 31.
I am placing a copy of the ordinance on the Borough website for your review. I will also be placing on the website information that will allow you to keep track of the Borough's total usage on a weekly basis.
Should we get to the last week of the month and we have exceeded 75% of our monthly allotment (22.5 million gallons), it will be necessary to declare a "Water Emergency" and place an immediate ban on all outside water usage. If this becomes necessary, this notification will be placed on the website and the Borough Bulletin Board located on the Boulevard. Such declaration may impose the complete ban and prohibition of outside water usage, including the watering of lawns and plants, the filling of pools and the washing of motor vehicles; and/or any other water use restrictions specified by the Borough Manager in the declaration which are reasonable under the circumstances considering the nature and extent of the water emergency
Thank you for your cooperation and support regarding our efforts to conserve water.
Joe Tempesta
Borough Manager
