Although the name "Mountain Lakes" was no doubt chosen for its rustic appeal, it aptly describes the predominant physical characteristics of the town. Mountain Lakes is located in north-central New Jersey where the.rolling hills of the New Jersey's Piedmont region meet the rocky outcroppings of the Highlands.

Mountain Lakes is approximately 35 miles due west of New York City, 12 miles northwest of Newark, New Jersey's largest city, and 9 miles north of Morristown, the county seat.

The borough is situated near the center of Morris County, one of the state's most populous and rapidly growing areas. Mountain Lakes lies just northwest of the intersection of Routes I-287, I-80 and north of NJ State Route 46, a major commercial thoroughfare which forms part of the Borough's southern boundary.

Directions

  1. From Newark Airport and Holland Tunnel: Take I-78 West to Rt. 24 West to the end. Stay right to get on I-287 North. Take Exit 41 to get on I-80 West. Very quickly, get off at Exit 42 "Morris Plains - Parsippany". Stay right at the end of the exit ramp to go towards Parsippany. Turn left at the 2nd traffic light onto Rt. 46. Go right at the 2nd traffic light onto Boulevard. You are now in Mountain Lakes. The Boulevard is one of its major streets running down the center of the town. Borough Hall is at the first traffic light.

  2. From the Lincoln Tunnel: Take Rt. 3 west to Rt. 46 west. After a few miles on Rt. 46, get on I-80 West. Get off at Exit 42 "Morris Plains - Parsippany". Stay right at the end of the exit ramp to go towards Parsippany. Proceed as in #1.

  3. From North Jersey and Upstate New York: Take I-287 South. At Exit 41, get on I-80 West. Very shortly, get off at Exit 42 "Morris Plains - Parsippany". Stay right at the end of the exit ramp to go towards Parsippany. Proceed as in #1.

  4. From South Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland: Take the N.J. Turnpike north. Get off at Exit 15W onto I-280 West. After about 25 miles, the road merges with I-80 West. A few miles further, get off at Exit 42 "Morris Plains - Parsippany". Stay right at the end of the exit ramp to go towards Parsippany. Proceed as in #1.

  5. From West New Jersey and Pennsylvania: Take I-80 East. Get off at Exit 38 "Route 46, Denville". After 2-3 miles, turn left at a traffic light onto Boulevard. Landmarks at this corner are the Evergreen Dinner Theater and a small PNC bank building. Proceed as in #1.
