Original Mountain Lakes Club House

This is a picture of the original Mountain Lakes Club House which was destroyed in a spectacular fire on New Year's Eve, 1928.

The fire started in late afternoon in the kitchen as they were preparing for the New Year's party that evening. All the men in town were volunteer fire fighters. Their wives met them at the train with their fire fighting gear and flasks of Cognac (it was terribly cold). They rushed to the blaze but it was too late. The club house, which was the center of Mountain Lakes social life, burned to the ground.

It was later rebuilt and the second building still stands.
