The Garden Club of Mountain Lakes

Calendar 2007 - 2008

The Garden Club meets on a formal basis from September to June, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 9 am for a business meeting, followed immediately by a program.  Unless otherwise noted, we meet in the lower level community meeting room of the Library on Elm Road.

Programs that are open to the public are listed here and a guest fee of $10 will be collected at the door.  Other activities for members only include workshops, field trips and anything else that sparks an interest.  We are a working club and welcome anyone who has a sincere interest in learning more about any aspect of gardening.

Getting Ready for the Show!
Our own team of Flower Show enthusiasts will educate the club on how to prepare entries for our upcoming April Flower Show.  After this program, we are promised that horticulture entries will be easy and labeling a cinch!

Environmentally Friendly Gardening
The Garden Club offers this program in conjunction with the League of Women Voters’ project “Mountain Lakes as a Green Community – Exploring Ways to Make a Difference”.  This program will specifically address gardening issues and opportunities that are relevant to Mountain Lakes residents including composting, lawn care, the use of fertilizers and pesticides, water management, Borough By-Laws, plant choices and other suggestions on how to ensure that your garden is as “green” as possible.  This program will be open to any member of the public.

The Swamp Pink and Other Native Wetland Plants
In 2007, the Garden Club of Mountain Lakes contributed to the funding of Ari Novy's study of the Swamp Pink (Helonias bullata).  This federally endangered wetland plant is found in the eastern US, but due to the cumulative effects of industrialization, the once numerous populations have dwindled to approximately 120.  As a part of his graduate studies at Rutgers, Mr. Novy is in the process of completing a population structure study of the Swamp Pink.  He will join us to discuss the Swamp Pink and other wetland plants.  Weather permitting, a walk will be arranged after the program to view this plant in its natural setting for those who are interested.

Annual Plant Sale
This annual event has been held for many years and affords members of the general public the opportunity to purchase perennial plants dug from member’s gardens, so you know they are successful in Mountain Lakes soil.  There will be other offerings as well, so please look for details in the Home & School Bulletin closer to the time.
