The Community Church is blessed with a fine tradition of music to support and encourage our spiritual growth. The choirs of our church prepare the youngest to the oldest to lead in worship through the singing of hymns and anthems of the past and present. Scripture and poetry enhanced by music is an added means of deepening the faith and spiritual life of each individual. Choir members have the opportunity to grow in musicianship while sharing their gifts with the church at large.
The first priority of the Music Ministry is to support the message of the scriptures and sermon of each Sunday worship service. Music is presented as an act of prayer and praise, not performance.
Music by the Chancel, Youth, and Children's Choirs, the Bell Choir, and the Sunday Ringers enrich our worship during the church year. People of all ages are welcome to participate and share in the joy music brings to our services. Opportunities abound for instrumentalists of all ages to share and develop their talents as well. We encourage parents to enroll their children in the choir program. The "language" of music learned as children is more naturally accomplished and of lasting value.
The Music Committee, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Board of Deacons, is responsible for sponsoring the choirs.
Major works presented in recent years include Handel's Messiah (excerpts), Vivaldi's Gloria, Corelli's Christmas Cantata, Alice Parker's An Easter Rejoicing (excerpts), Duruflé's Requiem, and Fauré's Requiem. For Maundy Thursday 2009, the Chancel Choir prepared excerpts from John Rutter's Requiem.
