Web Site Committee
Meeting Minutes -- February 13, 2008
A meeting of the Mountain Lakes Web Site Committee was held on Feb 13, 2008 at the Mountain Lakes Borough Hall. In attendance were Chairman Andy Bulfer, Clive Knowles, Nilesh Shringarpure, Mark Watrous, and Borough Council Liaison Blair Schleicher-Wilson.
Activities Since Last Time
- Andy Bulfer developed a process for new library acquisitions. The Library provides a list of the acquisitions in tab-delimited form (fields separated by tabs). Andy then converts the information into html and uploads it to the Library page. The first time was for the new acquisitions for the months of Nov-Dec. Later, he did it again for the acquisitions for the month of January.
- Clive Knowles added three items on the LWV home page. He also put the host name/address for the evening social on the calendar page as it still said TBA.
- Andy Bulfer updated the Woodlands Management Committee membership at the request of Chairman Jerry Uhrig.
- Clive Knowles received a list of 55 Plus events through March and added them to their calendar.
- Andy Bulfer put a tribute to Duke Smith on the home page. It consisted of a center picture with short-writeup, a link to a MLHS page about him and to an oral history about him provided by the HPC.
- Clive Knowles updated the honorary trees for Shade Tree Commission.
- Andy Bulfer developed notices and forms for the Stitt Family fundraiser based on the flyer about the event. He used CSS creatively to make the pages look exactly like the flyer.
- Andy Bulfer put a notice on Library page about their System Upgrade which caused their system to be down for a few days.
- Clive Knowles updated the LWV calendar and added the workshop info.
- Andy Bulfer developed a Library Summer Reading survey form that could be filled out and submitted on the Web.
- Andy Bulfer extensively updated the Track Web site: added a registration form, then updated all pages with current information. In the process, he virtually rewrote the html to bring the pages up to modern Web standards.
- Clive Knowles added a big banner on the LWV Web page saying: "Vote Tuesday!" Later, he changed it to say, "Vote Today!"
- Andy Bulfer developed a technique to transfer all the information on the Home and School Bulletin community calendar pages to the Community Calendar on the Web site. He used it to add all Feb events.
- Andy Bulfer changed the meeting date for the Health Commission at the request of Robin Steele.

Traffic and Error Review
The following are benchmarks and their values since the last meeting (change from last report is in parenthesis):
- Files (Feb 13): 1369 (+11), Image-1783 (-9), Pdf-96 (+4).
- Bad Links (Feb 13): not reported;
- Notice Board (since last mtg): Approved-14 (-6), Community Bulletin Board-5 (-1).
Old Business
- MAC -- The MAC Web pages are in seriously out-of-date condition. Their previous Web coordinator has moved. Blair Wilson reported that they don't have a new chairman yet and without one, little progress will be made.
- Girl Scouts -- The person who we expected to handle this has not done anything so far.
- FAQs -- These pages are somewhat out-of-date. Blair Wilson reported she has made solid progress and plans to enlist help from relevant Borough committee chairmen.
- Green Hints -- Clive Knowles has not heard from the LWV how they want to do them.
- Swim Team -- After we agreed to their initial request to update these pages, we have not received the updates. Nilesh Shringarpure reported they are working on it.
No Progress
- Broadcast E-mail System -- Andy Bulfer was told by Mayor George Jackson that Borough Manager Joe Tempesta will work on this later, after the Borough budget is finalized.
- Search Engine
- Monthly Traffic Report
- Top Menu -- Andy Bulfer has not yet rolled the redesign out to all the appropriate pages.
- Instances of 2007 -- Use Unix capabilities to search for instances of "2007" since some may indicate out-of-date pages.
New Business
- Community Calendar improvements - There was discussion of adding the capability for members of the community to add calendar items themselves. It was decided to proceed in two stages. First an update form will be developed and linked from the Community Calendar page. Later, the Community Calendar, Notice Board and Community Bulletin Board forms will be more tightly integrated. Clive Knowles will develop the first-stage update capability including a review process similar to that used for the Notice Board.
- Borough Committees and Commissions -- We have received a current listing of all committees/commissions and their members from Borough Clerk Christina Whitaker. Clive Knowles will update the material on the Web site.
- New Features on the Web Site -- There was discussion of several recent and past proposals. It was decided to invite Borough Manager Joe Tempesta to the next meeting to discuss them. The items include:
- "On-line Access" access to police functions such as handicap access, gun permits, police reports;
- Purchase of beach/tennis tags on the Web;
- Broadcast e-mail;
- Ordering boat slips on the Web;
- Borough budget and annual financial report information on the Web.
- Any other items the Borough Manager proposes;
- Strict Mode -- Virtually all our pages have "quirks mode" Doctype statements. Andy Bulfer urged that we begin to use strict mode every time we update pages or generate new ones. This will require changes in our practices. As a start, those committee members that don't have one were urged to get an html checker so they can produce compliant pages.
- Handicap Accessibility -- Nilesh Shringarpure will investigate the standards required and whether there is a tool on the Web to determine our degree of compliance. Subsequent to the meeting Andy Bulfer found that his html checker has a setting that will check for compliance.
Date for Next Meeting
The next regular meeting will be on Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at Borough Hall.

Chairman
