Web Site Committee
Meeting Minutes -- September 19, 2007
A meeting of the Mountain Lakes Web Site Committee was held on Sep 19, 2007 at the Mountain Lakes Borough Hall. In attendance were Chairman Andy Bulfer, Clive Knowles, Nilesh Shringarpure, and Mark Watrous. Absent was Borough Council Liaison Steve Shaw.
Activities Since Last Time
- Andy Bulfer added an action photo from the state championship lacrosse game. To do so, he connected to an external Web site that carried movies of the game. He selected one frame of the movie, which showed Shane Brennan about to score a goal. Bulfer then loaded it into Photoshop, cropped and sharpened it and installed it on the front page. It came out very well and we later received a complement from a former Laker who has moved away but likes to visit the Web site to see what's going on.
- Mark Watrous installed links to the new HSA website (see below) on two pages, the Community Home page and the HSA Bulletin page.
- Clive Knowles installed a Rabies Notice on the Health Commission page at the request of Robin Steele.
- Andy Bulfer added the 2006 Consumer Confidence Report at the request of Borough Manager Gary Webb.
- Mark Watrous helped the Secretary of the Zoning Board of Adjustment with a problem uploading Zoning Board minutes.
- Clive Knowles did several items over the summer for the LWV including removing outdated events and posting the two items sent by Jeana Macleod. He also developed an implementation of their calendar in the Perl computer language.
- Andy Bulfer put a link from the Notice Board page to the West Nile Virus article.
- Clive Knowles did a number of items on behalf of the of the Garden Club including installing a very attractive portfolio of pictures taken in Spring of the plots in town that they work on.
- Andy Bulfer added a description of a special library program on cartoonist Gene Myers held on July 26.
- Clive Knowles fixed several errors on the 2006 Consumer Confidence Report as requested by Borough Manager Gary Webb.
- Andy Bulfer added a newsletter to the Mountain Lakes Swimming and Diving site.
- Clive Knowles updated the Home and School Bulletin submission guidelines as requested.
- Andy Bulfer developed a new system that forwards notices to the Community Bulletin Board (see below).
- Clive Knowles updated the Shade Tree Commission pages including a nice photo of Arbor Day 2007.
- Andy Bulfer fixed a typo on Planning Board page at the request of chairman Mike Lightner.
- Clive Knowles added the complete schedule of 55 PLUS events provided by Duke Smith.
- Andy Bulfer added a description of the Library fall Storytime program and programmed a way for people to register their children for it on line.
- Clive Knowles added an archive for past Mountain Lakes Swim Association newsletters. He noticed that there is a single link on their main page of the latest newsletter. Rather than edit this link every time a newsletter is issued, Knowles modified the Perl script that generates the archive table of contents so that it furnishes the most recent letter when the main page link is clicked.
- Andy Bulfer replaced the center photo with an historic photo of Mountain Lake with the Stansfield boathouse in the foreground.
- Andy Bulfer posted again the name of the circulation director of the Star ledger for people to complain about undesired deliveries.
- Andy Bulfer added an entire new section on the Borough Facilities Committee.
- Andy Bulfer added a new e-mail address (personnel@mtnlakes.org) for use of Mayor Jackson to receive inquiries and responses on the soon-to-be-open Borough Manager position.
- At the request of Clive Knowles who was working on the LWV pages, Andy Bulfer enabled Perl, PHP, CGI, and SSI for that section.
- Andy Bulfer added a module on the public health nurse.
- Andy Bulfer put on directions to away games on the Recreation Field hockey page.
- Andy Bulfer changed the Health Commission meeting date as listed on the Health Commission page at the request of Robin Steele.
- Andy Bulfer fixed a bug on Field Hockey page that was causing the registration form to not display.
- Andy Bulfer added a FAQ document for the Borough Facilities Committee at the request of Richard Uranker.
- Andy Bulfer compiled a list of Borough e-mail addresses for Dana Merville and subsequently removed obsolete ones at her direction.
- Andy Bulfer replaced the center photo with a autumn lake scene photo he had taken last Fall.
Public Comments
None.
Old Business
- Home and School Association -- The HSA has completed their Web site and it is well done. They have their own domain and the site is hosted elsewhere.
- Notice Board Improvements -- The long-planned Notice Board improvements have been completed. A link to the list of Notice Board policies approved by the Committee has been added to the submission form. In addition, a feature has been added that permits those who submitted a notice to the Notice Board to electronically submit a notice to the Community Bulletin Board in front of Borough Hall also. This saves the time, effort, and expense of physically going to Borough Hall to put a notice in the Community Bulletin Board inbox. So far, the feature appears to be working flawlessly. Since it was instituted on June 27, it's been used 11 times.
- Town Club, Swim Club and MAC -- Clive Knowles and Nilesh Shringarpure reported nothing has happened on these sites yet. Their current Web coordinator is moving but they don't have a solid answer yet about who will coordinate their material.
- Girl Scouts -- Mark Watrous reported that he has had several conversations with Sue Shaw about the Girl Scouts page but nothing has happened yet. Watrous says that Shaw wants an implementation that would permit her to edit the pages herself.
No Progress
- FAQs -- In Steve Shaw's absence, there was no report on this.
- Broadcast E-mail System --Borough Manager Gary Webb says he is still working on the policies for it as requested by the Borough Council.
- Search Engine -- The Committee would still like a Search Engine on the front page. We had one with the previous server. One of the things that makes it difficult is a self-imposed requirement that the schools site (mtlakes.org) be included in the search results.
- Monthly Traffic Report -- Each Committee member currently receives a daily e-mail report on traffic handled by the Web site on the previous day. However, we would like the daily statistics rolled up into a monthly traffic report that could be distributed to a wider audience.
New Business
- First Presbyterian Church of Boonton -- A Mountain Lakes resident who is a member of the church requested it be added to the Houses of Worship page. Andy Bulfer told the Committee that the original intent of the page was to list churches in Mountain Lakes although later a link to an external site listing synagogues in northern New Jersey was added. The Committee decided to add a section entitled "Nearby Houses of Worship". It will initially contain the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton and the synagogues link. Others will be added if they are requested by someone in Mountain Lakes as long as they are in a nearby town and are a denomination not already represented by a church in Mountain Lakes.
- Borough Legal Notices -- The Committee discussed whether the Web site should be used for Borough legal notices such as notices of regular and special Borough Council meetings, budget notices, and ordinance announcements. It was decided to encourage the Borough Clerk to put notices of Borough Council meetings on the Notice Board. The Committee saw no need to place other types of legal notices on the Web site.
- Nite-Owls -- The Committee has been requested to host the Nite-Owls Web site which is currently hosted by Homestead Technologies, another ISP. After being assured that their membership was preponderantly Mountain Lakes residents, Andy Bulfer told them we would do it as we have for other town organizations. However, the first step, copying their existing site over has proven difficult as the site is fully integrated with Homestead's hosting system. Nilesh Shringarpure said he would undertake the job.
Date for Next Meeting
The next regular meeting will be on Wed October 10, 2007 at Borough Hall.

Chairman
