Web Site Committee
Minutes – June 13, 2001
The June meeting was held on June 13, 2001 at Borough Hall. In attendance were Emily Wolfe, Sally Santiago, Andy Bulfer, Stephanie Johns, and George Jackson.
Accomplishments
- Sally Santiago added a link to the School’s Special Services on the Schools page. She also modified all the links there to open a new window when you click on it not just blindly transfer. This helps users to stay at our site if they wish rather than vanishing to another site.
- Sally Santiago developed and installed a set of pages for the Lakers Sports Club. It features a short 5-second video clip for those whose browsers support it.
Sally Santiago added several attractive photographs furnished by Glenn Tippy to the Lakes Management committee page.
- The committee discussed the all-new page for the Borough section developed by Emily Wolfe. Her intent was to address some of the valid criticisms that had been made in the past and to make the presentation more attractive. Most people on the committee really liked it. Andy Bulfer reported that he had asked a local information professional to give an opinion of the new page and the professional had given it a strong endorsement. It was decided to keep the page.
- Andy Bulfer added a parking permit form on the Borough page as well as instructions for filling it out and submitting it. This had been requested by a Mountain Lakes resident who e-mailed us. Gary Webb had to modify the instructions for use on the web since it’s a two-part form. The instructions say two copies need to be submitted.
- Emily Wolfe prepared a better version of the logo image used on the Borough Committee pages. Andy Bulfer installed it on all the Committee front pages. It was pointed out that the new logo image needs to be added to the interior Borough Committee pages too, not just the front pages. Andy will do so.
- Emily Wolfe and Sally Santiago had a photographic session with the Police Chief, Robert Tovo, and the entire department. They took digital photos of each officer as well as several pictures of the entire group in their dress uniforms for which Emily had to stand high on a ladder to take the photograph. The plan is to use the photos in the module on the police that Emily and Sally are preparing.
- Emily Wolfe developed and added a page on the summer tennis program.
- Emily Wolfe has completed a draft with the Community Church site as a Type 2 organization. But she is having difficulty getting the pastor, Rev. Larry Kelp to review it. George Jackson urged that it be put on the web site and later, when Rev. Kelp has had a chance to see it, we will modify it if necessary. We are giving this priority since the Community Church is the only House of Worship in town that has nothing on the web site about it.
Andy Bulfer believes he has finally fixed the weekly and monthly hit reports. If they are OK, they will begin arriving every week on Monday and on the first of every month respectively.
Discussion and Action Items
- Sally Santiago will put one of Glenn Tippy’s pictures on the front page of the Lakes Management Committee similar to the tree on the Shade Tree Commission home page.
- Andy Bulfer will add a “What’s New” item about the new Parking Permit form.
- Andy Bulfer will add the better logo image to all the Borough Committee pages as described above.
- We need to get going on the Volunteer Fire Department pages. To get started, Andy Bulfer will send George Jackson a copy of the content outline we used for the Police Dept. George will modify it appropriately and approach representatives of the Volunteer Fire Dept. to urge them to submit the information.
- Emily Wolfe has not made much progress on obtaining information about the YMCA. She will get started by putting some simple stuff on a single page so it will not be totally empty.
- Emily Wolfe will put on the Community Church material as described above.
- We still need pictures of the School Board members. Sally Santiago will try to obtain them.
- Andy Bulfer will add the Water Quality information sent to him by Robin at Borough Hall.
- Andy Bulfer will add the census information that was sent to him by Borough Hall. Gary Webb had requested that it be added to the site. It was decided to put it on a page that can be reached from the FAQs page and from the Borough Clerk section of the Borough page. Andy will also add a “What's New” item about it.
- The Borough is moving on recodifying the ordinances. After the Borough Council has approved them, they will be installed on the web site of the company doing the work. They will have a search engine to navigate through them. At that point, we can add a link to it and we will be done. This should be in about 8-12 weeks. Andy Bulfer expressed reservations about the quality of the search engine’s user interface. He was concerned that the search engine does not look like the search engines out on the web that people are used to (e.g. Google or Altavista) and people will not be able to use it easily. We will revisit this issue when the project is completed and the site is operative.
- The Borough has engaged a consultant, Carisa Wangsness, to prepare a “Residents Guide” to be distributed in printed form to Mountain Lakes homeowners. There is a desire to put the material also on the Borough web site. George Jackson will contact Gary Webb to ensure we receive it in a format that permits installing it with minimal effort.
- Fran Patten will be taking over the School’s Technology Office replacing Elle Douglass who has retired. In addition, the School Superintendent will be starting on July 1. After giving them a decent time interval to settle into their new jobs, we need to approach them about pointing the mtlakes.org domain toward our site. George Jackson will remind Kate Lareau.
- George Jackson will discuss with Gary Webb getting more information about the recreation program on the web site.
- Emily Wolfe and Sally Santiago will get the module on the police department on the web site as described above.
- Sally Santiago will try to get a link for Hub Lakes and put it on the Community page.
- Because of the continuing problem with MS Front Page, Andy Bulfer will set up another userid/password for Stephanie Johns and also send her information on obtaining a free FTP client to use instead of Front Page.
- Andy Bulfer will finish the Community Calendar.
- Stephanie Johns will fix the Boy Scouts Troop 41 page.
- Andy Bulfer will put the link in HofW that George Jackson provided that leads to an external page containing the Jewish Houses of Worship in Northern NJ as described above.
- Andy Bulfer was asked to run a check of all the links on the site to determine which if any are no longer valid. He has developed a software program to do this automatically and promised to run it. The members of the committee agreed to fix the links that his program identifies as broken.
- Emily Wolfe will add material on the Swim Team.
- Emily Wolfe has received “a ton” of stuff about the Medical Needs Foundation. Sally Santiago volunteered to implement it.
- There was discussion of the “What’s New” section. Although this section was originally intended to contain an explication of new items on the web site, more recently it has been used for news items and coming events in town. The committee thought this was good and wants it to continue but was concerned that it tends to make the “What’s New” list too long. It was decided to have only the most recent items on the front page and have a link, something like “Previous What’s New items”, pointing to a second page that has the older items that we still want to keep around. It may be helpful to have dates associated with the items so that web site visitors can determine which items have been added since their last visit.
- We need to figure out a way to weed out or replace obsolete material on the web site. It was felt that a formal effort to do so should be deferred until fall when all the Committees organize and become active again.
The date of the next meeting has not been determined. The committee will discuss it off line and decide on a date. Kate Lareau or other designated School Board representative will be invited to attend.
Andy Bulfer,
Chairman
The types of content are:
| Type 1 – | Relatively simple and minor content, doesn’t change often (e.g. Senior Citizens). The web committee installs it using a standard template. |
| Type 2 – | Major, important organization (e.g. Environmental Commission) but doesn’t have the skills or interest to do it themselves. Web committee prepares customized pages on their behalf. |
| Type 3 – | Important organization that has the skills and interest to do it themselves (e.g. League of Women Voters). Web committee provides a login and space on the Borough server. Web committee also monitors quality and offers help where needed. |
| Type 4 – | Organization has their content on another system (e.g. St. Peters Episcopal Church). Web committee provides a link to them. |
