Web Site Committee

Minutes – March 21, 2001

The March meeting was held on Wed Mar 21, 2001 at Borough Hall. In attendance were Emily Wolfe, Sally Santiago, Andy Bulfer, and George Jackson. Stephanie Johns had previously informed the chairman that she would be unable to attend the meeting.

Accomplishments

  • Wolfe has been working with the Lake Drive School Education Foundation and promised to have something for them ready next week. She is also working with the YMCA and is making progress getting their content. She prepared and installed material about the Woods and Lakes run including a printable entry form. She has not yet been able to contact the UN Weekend committee.

  • Wolfe is also working on a Community Church site as a Type 2 organization. This is a good thing because the Community Church has great stature in the community but is the only house of worship in town that has had nothing on the web site about it.

  • Santiago has been working on preparing content for the Lakers Sports Club and she reported that it is nearly done. She has also nearly completed a great deal of material for the Home and School Assoc. Santiago has completed the Senior Citizens material including a complete calendar of events for the first half of 2001. She has not made much progress on the Jewish Community Organization.

  • Although Johns was not there, she is known to have developed and installed quite a bit of material on Boy Scouts Troop 41.

  • Bulfer met at Borough Hall on Mar 8 with the Police Chief, the Secretary of the Planning Board, the Secretary of the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Secretary of the Health Commission, and the Public Health Nurse. He obtained quite a bit of material as well as commitments to furnish additional material. Chief Tovo promised an extensive description of the Police Department and Municipal Court by early May.

  • Subsequently, Bulfer installed printable forms for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment including applications for a variance, a major subdivision, a minor subdivision, and other relevant forms. He has quite a bit of further material on the Health Commission/Office that he hasn’t gotten to yet.

  • Bulfer also installed a login for the Recreation Commission as a Type 3 organization. Although their material so far is neither extensive or impressive. Hopefully this will improve.

  • During this period, Bulfer worked with the Borough Historian to scan and install over sixty old House Pictures of homes on Morris Avenue. Morris Avenue has many “Laker” houses on it and residents have been complaining that their street hasn’t been represented in the old house pictures. There are now a total of 486 pictures in the popular old photos section including 403 photos of 200 different houses. There is also now a photo of Herbert J. Hapgood in the ML History section. Bulfer estimates that the scanning is about 90% completed. Dartmouth and Kenilworth and several smaller streets are still left to do.

  • Bulfer also met with Kate Lareau, a member of the Board of Education, to express the Committee’s concern about the lack of a Schools site. This meeting had been set up by Jackson who unfortunately was unable to attend. Bulfer also stated the Committee’s position that the URL www.mtlakes.org, which is currently owned by the Mountain Lakes Board of Education, should be swung over to point to the Borough’s home page since it leads people to believe it’s a borough link. The Bd. of Ed. should obtain another URL, such as www.mtnlakesschools.org that more clearly connotes a schools site.

Discussion and Action Items

  • There was quite a bit of discussion about what to do with the Class Reunions and whether they belong in the Links section, the Schools section, or the Community section. The committee decided that no change is required.

  • There was quite a bit of discussion about the reorganization of the Borough Hall page which Bulfer had done after his education at Borough Hall. Everyone felt it was better but there was still concern that it needs improvement. For example, some felt that it was confusing to have the Health Commission separate from the Health Office. The Recreation Commission and Recreation Department are also separate. Jackson volunteered to develop and distribute to the committee suggestions for changes.

  • It was decided that in the interim until the Board of Education provides decent content, we will provide at least some information about the Board. Santiago will obtain a list of Board members, their telephone and e-mail addresses, their bios, their meeting times and place, and other information.

  • Bulfer will check the current Schools links for correctness.

  • Jackson will investigate the Jewish Community Organization.

  • Jackson will provide bios for the new members of the Borough Council. Wolfe will get digital photos of the new members.

  • Bulfer will install the Wilcox park trails map provided by Jackson.

  • Wolfe will develop an improved design for the Planning Board page which everyone agreed is terrible.

  • Wolfe will redesign the Schools page to include links to the School Board information mentioned above and to Class Reunions.

  • Bulfer briefed the committee on a proposed Integrated Community Calendar. He investigated a number of calendar software packages on the Internet and chose this one. The software is available on the Internet as shareware. The calendar appears on the screen in an attractive month-at-a-glance format with the current month shown initially. Using Next-Previous buttons, you can easily and quickly go to other months. The events are bullet point headlines inside the appropriate day. Clicking on an event yields a pop-up window that provides more information about the event. It is envisioned that the calendar will contain material from Chris Whitiker's Borough calendar as well as material from the H&S calendar. There will be a very easy web interface to add new events to the calendar so that Whitiker can do it herself as well as the publicity chairmen of each community organization. Bulfer hopes the calendar will be ready by next meeting.

  • There was a discussion and explication of the hit reports provided to the committee on a weekly basis. Many questions were asked and the committee appeared to be fully satisfied with the tutorial.

The next two meetings will be on Thu, April 26 and Wed June 13 at Borough Hall.

Andy Bulfer,
Chairman

The types of content are:

Type 1 – Relatively simple and minor content, doesn’t change often (e.g. Senior Citizens). The web committee installs it using a standard template.
Type 2 – Major, important organization (e.g. Environmental Commission) but doesn’t have the skills or interest to do it themselves. Web committee prepares customized pages on their behalf.
Type 3 – Important organization that has the skills and interest to do it themselves (e.g. League of Women Voters). Web committee provides a login and space on the Borough server. Web committee also monitors quality and offers help where needed.
Type 4 – Organization has their content on another system (e.g. St. Peters Episcopal Church). Web committee provides a link to them.
