Plan for the Business Section of the Mountain Lakes Web Site
| Objectives:
- Populate the Business Section with data about local businesses that is useful and helpful to Mountain Lakes residents;
- Support local businesses especially those in Mountain Lakes by giving them and their products extra visibility to the public;
- Do so in a way that requires minimal effort to generate, format, and keep current the content.
|
| Content of the Business Section:
- The Business Section will contain listings of businesses that have purchased ads from the Mountain Lakes Women's Club for the Mountain Lakes Telephone Directory. These listings will have the same text and graphics as those currently provided in the Telephone Directory.
- The rationale is that these are businesses that believe they have a product or service in which Mountain Lakes residents would be interested and they are serious enough and substantial enough to spend money to tell the people of Mountain Lakes about themselves.
- By this technique, we are including a wide spectrum of businesses that could possibly be of interest to Mountain Lakes residents not just businesses physically located in Mountain Lakes. (Objective #1 above).
- Another advantage is that we will be supporting the Mountain Lakes Women's Club, a worthy and important organization, by making the advertising that they sell for the Telephone Directory more valuable. [More valuable means the Women's Club may be able to either charge more, sell to businesses that have declined in the past, or expend less effort in the sales process.]
- Thus the business section will require minimal additional effort because we will reuse the work the Women's Club puts in. (Objective #3)
- If the business has a web site, a link will be provided to it. The Women's Club would obtain this in their sales process.
- Businesses located in zip code 07046 that have not purchased ads from the Women's club also will be included (Objective #2). They will be listed by name, address and telephone number only and be in a smaller font. The data will be obtained from one of the Internet telephone directories.
- In summary, to have a nice listing in the Mountain Lakes Web Business Directory, you must purchase an ad from the Mountain Lakes Women's Club.
|
| Scale:
- The 1999 Telephone Directory contains 120 ads. There are 37 ads for Mountain Lakes businesses, 27 from Denville, 26 from Boonton/Boonton Twp, 19 from other nearby towns and 11 whose location was not given.
- The Women's Club are said to have sold over 270 ads for next year's Telephone Directory.
- There are 245 business listings in 07046 as listed by the Internet Anywho telephone directory.
|
| Navigation:
- Alphabetical listings;
- Classified Section using the business classifications in the Mountain Lakes Telephone Directory.
|
| Roles:
- The Women's Club will do what they do now: solicit and sell ads, collect revenue, obtain ad copy, do formatting and layout where required. The only additional step for them is to forward the material to the Mountain Lakes Business Section Webmaster.
- The Mountain Lakes Business Section Webmaster will design and maintain the overall look and feel of the site. The Webmaster will also generate and maintain the navigational tools.
- Mountain Lakes Webmaster will receive the material from the Women's Club, format it for the web if required (e.g., scan hard-copy material, convert graphics format to gif or jpeg, etc.), and load it on to the Mountain Lakes web site.
- The Mountain Lakes Webmaster will generate and maintain the listing of businesses in 07046 that have not purchased ads from the Women's Club.
|
| Format and Updating:
- It would be most convenient if the Women's Club could provide the information in machine-readable form. This is not required however, it can be scanned. Perhaps the Women's Club can obtain it in this form from the businesses themselves or from the printer.
- The material should be in color if possible. If not, we will use b/w like the current Telephone Directory. (Objective #3).
- A minor amount of coloring to make it look more attractive may be done by the Webmaster in the course of formatting the material for the web, but this would be at his/her discretion and the businesses would not have a say in it.
- The material will be updated as often as the Women's Club chooses. Initially we will start with annual updates like the telephone directory.
|
| Cash Flows:
- All ad revenue will be retained by the Women's Club.
- Control of ad pricing will be retained by the Women's Club.
|
| Getting Started:
- The Women's Club is almost finished with their Telephone Directory for 1999-2000. To get started, we would simply use the b/w graphics from this year.
- The Women's Club may wish to poll their ad customers to confirm they wish to have their advertising on the web. This would also give each business an opportunity to provide the URL of their web site and their graphics in color.
|
| Future Enhancements:
Possible future enhancements include:
- Additional information about the business such as product listings, pictures of products, pictures of their place of business, hours of operation, price lists, etc.
- More frequently updated material. For example, the Women's Club could choose to offer quarterly updates at an additional charge.
- Page counter to tell each business how many "hits" they had.
- A "Reviews" section in which Mountain Lakes residents could input their experiences with the business and the aggregated reviews (not individual responses) displayed to web site visitors.
- Listings by street address or telephone number
