1.      Minutes:

The May 27, 2008 minutes were approved.

  1. Director’s Report:

Mike Prevoznik announced that Celia Flynn has been appointed Mountain Lakes new Recreation Director.  Congratulations Celia!  Debbie Bednar and Peter Holmberg helped interview a slate of very qualified candidates.  The Committee thanked Debbie and Peter for committing so much time and energy to the selection process.  The Commission is delighted to have Celia accept the position.  Although Celia has very big shoes to fill, the Commission looks forward to working with Celia and putting her own stamp on Mountain Lakes Recreation.  We also look forward to having Denise join us as a member of the Rec Commission and help Celia and the Commission in the transition and beyond.

Debbie raised that Rec should explore whether we can strengthen the link between the Rec Commission and Municipal Alliance (which offers programs such as Giraffe, Parent to Parent, Coffee and Conversation, MAC Night and Laker Pride).

  1. Fourth of July:

Fourth of July Fun Races went well.  Weather was not great, but the spirits were high and fun was had by all.  Thanks for all the volunteers (Debbie Bednar, Rich Mancuso, Peter Holmberg, Joyce Prevoznik, Elaine Boyle and family members).  Commission member Holmberg unfortunately failed to repeat as kayak champion as his team could not overcome his kayak taking on water (early and often).  Problems had nothing to do with the crew.

The Commission discussed at length the feedback received to date on Garden State Fireworks.  This was Garden State’s first year and the feedback was generally that the firework display was too long and uneventful, losing the audience’s attention.  This was particularly a concern given their fee was $10,000, up from $7,000 with the prior vendor.

  1. Summer Rec Update:

Summer Rec attendance is again down for the second year in a row.  Interestingly, swim team enrollees is way up.  Tennis tag checkers need supervision.

  1. Other Business:

Richard Urankar will be replacing Ellen Emr as the Council liaison to the Rec Commission.  We thank Ellen for all her insights and support.
