1.      Minutes:

The April 29, 2008 minutes were approved.

  1. Summer Rec:

Brad Davidson to run summer rec and may not return next summer.  More adults were hired as we will be in the High School (not Wildwood) and to help out Brad with Denise resigning as Rec Director.  84 counselor applications were received for 40 spots.  Some who did not get a counselor job will be tag checkers.  Denise worked through any issues raised by parents complaining.  June 5th & 12th will be counselor training.  Dede will repeat safety training for new counselors.  Rec will be June 30th to August 8th.  Event calendar has been finalized.  Men’s basketball Wednesday nights from July 2nd to August 6th.

  1. Upcoming Events:

July 4th Fireworks – Garden State Fireworks will be handling the display this year.  Dede will close Island Beach by noon.  Lifeguards will put balloons on perimeter.  Steve Shaw of Council soliciting large donations.  An ad was included in the June bulletin.  Rain date is Sunday, July 6th.  Kim Rozemitis of Swim Team will help with Fun Races.  There will be no Fun Races on Rain Date.  Neither Denise nor Celia will be at the Fun Races.

Fall Events – Junior Field Hockey Tri-Town Clinic will be in September for grades 3-6 at Midvale (Kathy Mitchell will lead).  Pony Share will be at the Canal in Boonton in August (a Tri-Town event).  Halloween Haunt will be the Sunday before Halloween (Oct 26th) for 4th & 5th graders.  The tree lighting will be December 7th.

Bulletin - Next bulletin will be done in August (Aug ’08).

  1. Candidate Search for New Rec Director:

The Commission discussed the sad news of Denise resigning her post as Rec Director.  The Commission debated the skills needed for Rec Director – interaction with multiple town and other town groups; organizational skills to help coordinate multiple schedules; works well with kids, teens, young adults, mid-lifers, and seniors; creative; knowing the town and responding to its needs; resiliency; political skills; Rutgers’ certified preferred; thick skin, etc.

We also will need a plan to replace Dede in the next few summers just in case she wants to retire.  Rec agreed that we would like to maintain or grow the current Rec program.  Beach experience may be helpful as the beach program will be undergoing change over the next few years.  Mike to contact Joe Tempesta regarding how best to do the interview process.  Mike to ask Rec members for any key questions to ask.  Denise has agreed to stay on Rec as a member at least for a transition period.  Denise was thanked profusely for her 8 years of selflessly and creatively serving as Rec Director and serving as a true smiling ambassador for our town.  She will be sorely missed and long remembered.
