Recreation Committee Meeting – June 12, 2007

Present:            Denise Brennan, Dede Conlan, Mike Prevoznik, Scott Richards, James Smith and Blair Wilson

Absent:             Debbie Bednar, Mike Davies, Celia Flynn, Peter Holmberg, Ed Kubliski and Catherine Bakewell (student representative)

Minutes:            The minutes of the May 15th meeting were approved.

SUMMER REC:

All counselors (50) hired and first aid training was completed.  Kathy Finley will run the multi-purpose room. Mrs. Carmiche will run the Arts program.

Beach report: 11 guards were hired and training has begun.  Swim lessons start on July 5.  The Swim Association is still trying to find space to help store their supplies.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

4th of July: Celia Flynn to help coordinate the Fun Races.

The first Tri-Town Rec movie was “ET”, but unfortunately it was poorly attended.  Only 85 people attended. “Space Jam” is scheduled for July 3.  Denise will publicize.

The Briarcliff Baseball Team went to the County finals. James Smith advised that the Team will be looking to be Board-sanctioned next year or at minimum have insurance (otherwise the team can not qualify for the County tournament.)

NON-RESIDENT USE OF FACILITIES:

The proposed ordinance regarding non-resident use did not pass Council on Monday.  Blair explained that what is currently in place remains and so it is business as usual. The beach opens on June 24.  The Commission discussed the need to update the signage at the beach and recommend that the signage be modified as follows:

§         Park and Beach open from dawn to dusk

§         Fee required for beach use when lifeguards are present (this covers both day passes for residents and non-residents as well as beach tags and beach passes)

§         Beach is open only to Mountain Lakes residents and their guests when lifeguard is not on duty (this would restrict non-resident use of the beach before/after closing time in season and al times off season)

The Commission’s recommendation is based on their experience to date that the problems at the beaches have been largely in the off-hours. If the beach problems were more prevalent during the regular hours, the Commission supported prohibiting non-resident use entirely. Either way, the key issue to the Commission remains police enforcement.

OTHER BUSINESS:

New Member Update: Rich Mancuso and Peter Sentowski were both elected by Council at May meeting.  Council will send them letters notifying them of their appointment.

Blair Wilson asked that at the next meeting the Rec consider adding the “55+” group as a sub committee of Rec.
