DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

Budget Update: The budget was approved.

New Programs:

Free Basketball Clinic: Jim Bagli who helped coach at Rutgers-Newark offered to run a free basketball clinic this summer at the high school. The Commission supported this, but first Denise will coordinate to see if Coach DyDook will be offering one as well.

James Smith gave an update on the Briarcliff Baseball Team (9-3):  The season has been a great success. Twenty-six players tried out and 19 made the team. Budd Luzzi has done a fantastic job coordinating.  The softball team helped raise awareness and interest in the sport.  Transportation to and from the games presented challenges as well as finding regular practice fields, which were not readily accessible. The Commission thanked James for volunteering and doing such a fantastic job coaching the kids.

SUMMER REC:

A tentative calendar was developed. Brad Davidson, Kathy Finley, and Mrs. Carmiche will be Art teachers.  Seventy people were interviewed for Rec positions.

The Running Club is up and running.

Open action item: Deposit policy if people want to reserve the Beach or any picnic area and have access to the bathrooms. Denise to draft.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

The Trout Derby was a success.  Large fish were caught. There was also a great turnout for the stocking. Fifty-two people attended the Chili Cook-Off and all had a great time.  The Easter Egg Hunt also went well. Matt Gripaldi’s band may be booked for this summer’s Concert Series.  The 4th of July rain date will be Sunday, July 8th.  Fun races will be at the Mountain Lakes Club on July 4th. Denise will put the ad in the June Bulletin.

Recreation Committee Meeting – May 15, 2007                                                          Page 2

The Swim Team is hosting the Lakeland A’s in August.  There will be an open age invitational for Hub Lakes on July 21st.  Denise will find out if the Swim Club will pay for pre-season lifeguards.  The Borough crew will be building the shelving for the team’s equipment and the MLSA will be responsible for the cost.

NON-RESIDENT USE OF FACILITIES:

The Rec Commission believes that in the off hours where the facilities are unattended (whether at night or for the 10 months of the year when we do not have lifeguards or tennis taggers) our facilities should be only for residents and guests. The Commission believed that non resident use of the beaches when lifeguards are there seemed to be under control (not widely used due to higher fee involved and no issues during that time) and thus could continue if all agreed. The main issue is enforcement during the off hours (in season or off season). Ultimately the question becomes whether allowing nonresident usage of the beaches under the restrictions imposed today during the summer season causes more problems with enforcing non-resident use of the facilities during off-hours during the summer season. Rec has not seen evidence to date that this is the case. The Commission wants to make sure that any final position does not appear to conflict with all the positive goodwill that Mountain Lakes Recreation has generated through working with the other 2 towns on tri-town rec programs.
