Lake Management Activities

Loon "Though loons do not nest in Mountain Lakes, they are one of the many kinds of birds which use our lakes in the course of migration." For more Mountain Lakes wildlife photos and information.

Naiad -  "This water plant is one of the Naiad species. The lakes management process in Mountain Lakes tries to control excessive growth of plants. However, these are living lakes and allowing reasonable plant growth is often one of the best ways to keep water clean and clear."

Alum Treatment - "In this picture you can see the cloud temporarily formed by treatment of a lake with alum. This settles to the bottom of the lake, binding a key nutrient, phosphorus, to the alum and cutting back plant growth. This has been a successful treatment in Mountain Lakes, greatly reducing the need for treatment with complex chemical compounds to kill plants. This also takes nutrients out of the system for a long time, rather than leaving plants to rot and return their nutrients to the cycle."

Hydrorake"Our lakes service provider uses the Hydrorake once or twice a year to remove accumulations of dead leaves, which not only clears access for recreational use of the lakes but removes nutrients from the system as well."
