MEETING MINUTES

DECEMBER 3, 2007

PRESENT:                 Mrs. J. Kubliski, Mrs. J. George; Dr. B. Girz, Dr. R. Stillman &

                                   Mrs. A. Stone

ALSO PRESENT:     Mr. John Wozniak, Health Officer

Dr. Girz, Chairman of the Health Commission, opened the meeting at 8:10 P.M.

The latest Public Health Nurse’s Report was reviewed.  It was noted that the investigation for the source of the infection for 2 brothers with Giardiasis was completed.  It is believed that the mother who had traveled abroad had passed it on to her sons.

Dr. Stillman expressed his concern about MRSA infections (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).  He stated you would see the infection in hospitals, but now it is out in the community.  He commented he had seen a person with a cut on the shoulder that developed into an abscess then into MRSA.  Mrs. Stone stated it has been found on pets also.  Owners should watch for any sores on their pets.  She commented that the infection is still being treated the way it has been the last 25 years.  Mrs. George asked if this was exacerbated by the inappropriate use of antibiotics.  Drs. Girz and Stillman replied that it was.  Antibiotics are in the meats we eat.

Mrs. Kubliski asked Mr. Wozniak if he had seen any flu outbreaks.  Mr. Wozniak replied that he hadn’t – this usually appears in January and February.  Mr. Wozniak will e-mail the flu reporting from the schools as they come in.  It was noted that 134 people were inoculated at the annual flu clinic on November 5th.

The latest Health Officer’s Report was reviewed.  Mrs. Kubliski asked about the mold situation at Lake Drive School.  Mr. Wozniak replied that this was handled through Mark Prusina, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds for the Bd. of Ed.  It could have been caused by water coming into the classroom from a leaky roof.  He stated he hadn’t heard anything further; and felt if it was still a problem, he would have had complaints from teachers.

Mr. Wozniak stated he recently participated in an OEM tabletop exercise based on a category 3 hurricane that had affected several counties but not Morris.  Our involvement was to help in providing shelter assistance to those affected residents who needed to be temporarily relocated from the other counties.  Included with this was the need to address family pets.  Dr. Baeder, who was the vet at our recent rabies clinic, was the primary vet for this aspect of the exercise.

There were 114 animals inoculated at the November 17th Rabies Clinic – 74 dogs and 40 cats.

The Secretary reported that the appointment terms for both Dr. Stillman and Mrs. Kubliski expire on December 31, 2007.  The Council wanted to know if they would be willing to be reappointed for another 3-year term.  Happily both accepted.

The Commission congratulated Mrs. George on becoming a grandmother to Quinn Connolly Flor!

The Health Commission is scheduled to meet next on January 7, 2008.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
