JANUARY 10, 2007

PRESENT:                   Dr. B. Girz, Mrs. A. Stone & Dr. R. Stillman

ABSENT:                   Mrs. J. Kubliski & Mrs. J. George

ALSO PRESENT       Mr. J. Wozniak, Health Officer & Mr. C. Gormally, Council Liaison

Dr. Girz, Chairman of the Health Commission, opened the meeting at 8:20 P.M.

Councilman Gormally was introduced as the new liaison for 2007.

It was noted that there is bow hunting going on in the Tourne.  Councilman Gormally stated that his wife said hunters in the Tourne approached walkers.  Councilman Gormally also stated that there would be no repeat of the deer culling in the Borough this year, as infrared count of the deer population does not warrant it.

The latest Public Health Nurse’s report and Health Officer’s report was reviewed.  Mr. Wozniak noted that there has been no flu activity here as yet.  The last report showed only sporadic activity in Central Jersey.

Dr. Stillman asked if there was anything going on in the schools.  He said he’d be interested in having one of the school nurses come to one of the Commission’s meetings.  Dr. Stillman commented on a recent story of some kind of skin disease like herpes being contracted from wrestling mats or wrestling in sweat.  Dr. Girz noted that at the school’s meets the mats are wiped down with cleaning solution after each match.

Mr. Wozniak noted that the Health Department is promoting an obesity program again this year.  It will be held at the Montville Library instead of at Chilton Hospital.  He stated that some Mountain Lakes’ students did participate last year.  Lifestyles are examined, exercise is discussed, and parents are involved.  Dr. Girz said the schools have addressed it, and the lunch menus have been drastically changed.  Mr. Wozniak stated guidelines would become even more stringent.  He said that if sugar is the first ingredient listed, then the item couldn’t be sold during school hours – after, but not during.  Dr. Girz commented that she thought it was if sugar was one of the first two ingredients.

Dr. Stillman noted that kids in high school today are under more pressure – they take more AP courses – pressure doesn’t let up until around April for seniors.  Councilman Gormally stated that they are all applying to the same colleges.

The Health Commission is scheduled to meet next on February 14th.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
