RESPONSIBILITIES

The municipal court of the Borough of Mountain Lakes is a court of limited jurisdiction, which hears cases arising in the Borough involving minor criminal offenses, violations of local ordinances and motor vehicle laws.

The responsibility of the court is to make sure justice is carried out in a fair manner. It also has the responsibility to collect fines, impose sanctions, such as community service and assignment to the Sheriff's Labor Assistance Program and may levy periods of incarceration not to exceed 180 days.

LOCATION AND HOURS

The court is located at 400 Boulevard, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046.
Business hours are 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday through Thursday.
Court sits on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Borough Hall.
Fines can be paid by mail to the Mountain Lakes Violations Bureau or in person at Borough Hall.
Traffic ticket fines can also be paid by credit card on the Web.

LIST OF COMMON OFFENSES

The most common offenses are traffic violations. These would include speeding, improper passing, failure to wear seatbelts and failure to inspect, register or insure vehicle. More serious offenses include driving while intoxicated, disorderly conduct, theft or simple assault.
Some common fines for traffic violations are:

  Unregistered vehicle:   $54.00
  Improper Passing:   $85.00
  Failure to wear seatbelt:   $46.00
  Careless driving:   $85.00
  Speeding: 1-9 mph over   $85.00
    10-14 mph over   $95.00
    15-19 mph over   $105.00
    20-24 mph over   $200.00
    25-29 mph over   $220.00
    30-34 mph over   $240.00
