Meeting Minutes
June 15, 2009
Committee Members Present: Barlow, Halpin, Marshall, Terlizzi, Von Sternberg, Wargo and council liaison Steve Shaw; Absent: Rusak, Sullivan.
Boonton Centennial, Mr. Jack Wooton:
- Boonton Centennial 1967; 8500 residents at the time; started within Town Council & spread to more “citizens’- based”
- Budget $100,000, $9000 seed money from town, returned $25,000 back to the town
- Mr. Wooton provided us with following materials: Article- “Boonton Town Relives it 100-year History”, Outline of Parade, Program, Pamphlet on “The Boonton Years”
- Concentrated most activities in June with a “Centennial Week”: purchased souvenirs, buried time capsule in Mayor’s Park (used Morado Valve in Montville), parades, dances; charged for most events
- Goal was to return money for an historical museum & library; only designated capital project
- Went to 42 organizations to drum up involvement- Jack went dressed up and sang a song; didn’t leave until he had a firm commitment
- Boonton committee comprised of a Chairperson with 3 sub chairs (past, present & future); also a separate PR person
- Formed a corporation to isolate liability; recommends that we request the state to honor the town
- Planned 2 different big events (high-end ball and less expensive picnic due to diverse economic needs of residents); 6000 residents attended the picnic
- 2 parades during the week with 20- horse drawn floats; stated that 2 were unnecessary
- “Portrait of Boonton” slides are still available
New Proposed Committee Member: Kelly Thompson
Steve will put on Council agenda for a vote at their next meeting
Budget:
- letter to residents requesting donations & support on hold until we are more prepared and can outline the use funds
- need to establish appropriate accounting through the Borough; Steve to set-up; he also confirmed that up to $2000 in seed money could be available from Council if we need it immediately
- Mary Ann Wargo – committee treasurer
Capital Projects:
- Sue Marshall & Pat Rusak offered to take the lead in renovating the esplanade and will represent the ML Garden Club.
- Summary of needs: Repair steps (Mark Prusina prepared to complete this year), landscaping ( Three main areas- arbors, small beds near lower steps and top, flat section converted to a lawn), possibly remove cedar trees which block the view (pending Shade Tree Commission approval)
- Sue & Pat will bring plans & budget estimate to our next meeting. Need to present to Council for approval
A motion was made by Mary Ann Wargo/ seconded by Kris Barlow to make the esplanade a capital improvement project for the Centennial Steering Committee. Vote: 5 in favor, none opposed, 1 abstained

Current key events in town are included on the agenda. Some discussion on how to tie in with these and/ or develop our own events. Need to discuss further at our next meeting.
